Named for English settler Thomas Fenwick, Fenwick Island sits directly on the Transpeninsular Line and is most known for the historic Fenwick Island Lighthouse. Built in 1858, the lighthouse is 87 feet tall and is today meticulously maintained by a committed group of volunteers. The famed light sits almost directly on the Delaware-Maryland state line and is open for tours during certain times of the year. It is also the only lighthouse in coastal Delaware that today is accessible via land, as the lighthouses in the Rehoboth/Dewey area are either out on the Delaware Breakwater or located on a lightship.
One of the gems of this southern Delaware beach town is Fenwick Island State Park, which is a three-mile barrier island and is a great spot for relaxing and enjoying a quiet day in coastal Delaware. Boasting 344 acres of peaceful enjoyment, the park has one of the few areas in Delaware with a designated surfing area. You can also drive your vehicles on the beach with a surf fishing vehicle tag, allowing for a great day of fishing and relaxation.
There are dining options galore in Fenwick Island, including such popular spots as Harpoon Hannah’s, Catch 54, Papa Grande’s, Just Hooked and the Fenwick Crab House. In fact, there are dozens of excellent conveniences along the coastal highway, from banks to bathing suits, that make it easy to take care of your daily needs. But if you do feel like a little more excitement from time to time, Ocean City is literally just across the street waiting for you. This bustling city is a hotbed of activities and festivals that will keep you busy, from Sunfest and the Festival of Lights to the annual World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition.
